PreferaOB includes a therapeutic dose of Vitamin B6 which may
reduce likelihood of morning sickness and control nausea and vomiting during pregnancy
Up to 80% of women suffer from nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP).11 Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is a condition that usually begins four to seven weeks after the last menstruation, and in a small percentage of cases, it nausea and vomiting during pregnancy can continue beyond 20 weeks of pregnancy. In most cases, morning sickness is a regular annoyance which, in spite of its name, can last throughout the day. According to a survey of 593 women with early symptoms of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, the loss of energy caused by ongoing nausea significantly impaired their ability to function at work and at home, especially with children already in the household.29
Surprisingly, morning sickness is associated with positive pregnancy outcomes. Studies have shown that women who had experienced nausea and vomiting during pregnancy in early pregnancy were more likely to deliver healthy, full-term babies than women without nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.11
Morning sickness can become a serious concern for mother and child, however. Approximately 0.5% of women experience hyperemesis gravidarum a severe form of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that may lead to dehydration, ketosis, electrolyte disturbances, and the loss of more than 5% of body weight.11, 34 Hyperemesis gravidarum may cause rupture of the esophagus, damage peripheral nerves, and impair fetal development11
Research to find the cause for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy include studies assessing emotional imbalance and stress, slowed gastrointestinal motility in response to the relaxing effect of progesterone, to changes in human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and estrogen levels. At this time, all these possibilities are speculation as the causes of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy are unknown.11
The usefulness of vitamin B6 for controlling morning sickness is well documented and is the treatment of choice for treating nausea.11 PreferaOB contains 50mg of vitamin B6 - a therapeutic dose proven to be effective in helping control nausea2 In addition, PreferaOB is one of the smallest prenatal tablets available making it easier to swallow compared to larger prenatal tablets. |
