Folic Acid
Folic acid is a B-vitamin that is necessary for proper cell growth. Sufficient intake of folic acid in the months before conception and during the first trimester of pregnancy can prevent up to 70% of neural tube defects (NTDs). The two most common neural tube defects are spina bifida and anencephaly. These birth defects can cause lifelong disability and lead to premature death. According to the CDC, most women in the United States do not get enough folic acid in their diets to help prevent birth defects. Therefore, most health care providers recommend supplementing a healthy diet with folic acid for three months before conception and throughout pregnancy13. Only folic acid is recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Therefore, the PreferaOB® family of products contains 1 mg of folic acid4. Aside from getting folic acid from your PreferaOB® prenatal, you can also get folic acid from fortified foods such as grains, pastas, or breakfast cereals.
